Ahmed Adeeb
Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor ( Dhivehi އަހުމަދު އަދީބު އަބްދުލް ޤަފޫރު; * April 11, 1982 ) is a Maldivian politician. He was Vice President under President Abdulla Yameen .
Adeeb is the son of a prison guard and a customs officer. He was Treasurer of the Maldives Chamber of Commerce in 2008. In 2012 he became Minister of Tourism. The country's audit office found that in this role he was siphoning off $ 6 million for himself. For the approval of each new tourism project, he is said to have received a million US dollars in bribes. Since July 2015, Adeeb has been Deputy President. The minimum age for this position has been lowered especially for him.
Adeeb is the leader of a "moped rocker" gang in the Maldivian capital Malé . This takes action against demonstrators and should u. a. be responsible for the disappearance of a journalist critical of the government.
Adeeb has two wives.
Just a few days after defending the controversial conviction of former President Mohamed Nasheed , which was criticized by human rights organizations, in an interview with Deutsche Welle , Adeeb was arrested on October 24, 2015 in Malé. He was alleged to have been involved in planning the bomb attack against President Abdulla Yameen on September 28, 2015. The president was unharmed at the time. On November 5, 2015, he was unanimously removed from office by the Maldivian parliament. The MPs of the opposition party MDP refused to take part in the vote. In mid-June 2016, Adeeb was sentenced to fifteen years in prison, and the country's previous finance minister, Abdulla Jihad , was appointed as his successor.
