Joseph Daul (born April 13, 1947 in Strasbourg ) is a French politician of the conservative party Les Républicains . He was a member of the European Parliament , where he chaired the Group of the European People's Party (EPP) from 2007 to 2014 . As an EU parliamentarian, Daul was a member of the Conference of Presidents. Since October 8, 2013 he has been Chairman of the EPP , successor to Wilfried Martens . In November 2019, he handed over the office to Donald Tusk .

Youth, studies and work

Daul grew up with six siblings on his parents' farm and took over the business at the age of 20. He studied agriculture at the École d'Agriculture and the École du syndicalisme agricole and graduated in 1981 from the Institut des hautes études de la défense nationale . He grew up bilingual with Alsatian and French .

Daul is a member of the French farmers' association and in 1976 was elected Vice-President of the Center National des Jeunes Agriculteurs , where he was primarily familiar with European politics. In the course of the BSE crisis in 1997, he became chairman of the French beef producers' association, Fédération Nationale française des producteurs de viande bovine .

Political functions and awards

Joseph Daul was mayor of the Pfettisheim community between 1989 and 2002 and has been deputy mayor of Pfettisheim and vice-president of the Communauté de communes du Kochersberg since 2002 . In the European elections of 1999 he was in the European Parliament elected and in 2004 and 2009 re-election. He was a member of the Agriculture Committee from the beginning and its chairman from 2002 to 2004. During this time he was also Chairman of the Conference of Committee Chairs of the European Parliament. In 1999 he was part of the delegation of the European Parliament at the WTO Conference in Seattle , in 2001 he was in Doha at the opening of the so-called Doha Round involved and in 2003 he participated in the WTO Conference in Cancun in part.

Daul is a holder of the Order of Merit for Agriculture , Knight of the Ordre national du Mérite and the Legion of Honor .

From 2004, Joseph Daul was investigated in France on charges of misuse of public funds. However, the investigation was closed in August 2007.

Personal

Joseph Daul lives in Pfettisheim, Alsace, has been married since 1969 and has two children.
