A total of 72 seats

The European elections in France 2009 took place on June 6th and 7th, 2009. It was part of the EU- wide European elections in 2009 , with 72 of the 736 seats in the European Parliament in France . Should the Lisbon Treaty come into force during the 2009-14 legislative period, two more French MPs will join the parliament. The election winner was the conservative Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP) with 27.9% of the votes and 29 seats, a significant increase compared to the 2004 European elections . The Parti socialiste (PS), on the other hand, lost significantly and gained 16.5% of the votes (14 seats), which meant that they lost more than half of their seats. The largest percentage gains were made by the green electoral alliance Europe Écologie (EE), which more than doubled its number of votes and seats compared to the result of Les Verts 2004 and with 16.3% (14 seats) was only slightly behind the PS.

Electoral system

The election took place over two days, with June 6 only in the overseas territories of French Polynesia , Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon , Guadeloupe , Martinique , French Guiana , Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin , on June 7 in total rest of France was chosen.

The election took place according to proportional representation with a threshold clause of 5 percent in eight constituencies , namely the regions Nord-Ouest (10 parliamentarians), Ouest (9), Est (9), Sud-Ouest (10), Sud-Est (13) , Massif Central-Center (5), Île-de-France (13) and the overseas territories (3).

Campaigning parties

In addition to the parties already represented in the European Parliament, a large number of other lists entered the European elections. At the same time, several parties had formed electoral alliances on various occasions in order to increase their chances of getting seats in the smaller constituencies.

There were also numerous so-called dissident lists, which sometimes competed in several circles: The Parti de la France was z. B. supported by various dissidents of the Front National, the Association Communistes gathered opponents of the reform communist line of the PCF, or the Alliance écologiste indépendante (independent ecological alliance) set up a platform of the under the motto Notre énergie pour la Terre (Our power for the earth) bourgeois environmentalists and small parties who had not participated in the Europe Ecologie collection, such as the bourgeois animal rights activist Jean-Marc Gouvernatori, the co-founder of the Greens and former head of the “Fundis” in the party, Antoine Waechter , the bourgeois-ecological party Génération Ecologie and celebrities like singer Francis Lalanne and journalist Patrice Drevet.
