European elections in Malta 2009
The European elections in Malta 2009 took place on June 6th, 2009 together with the Maltese local elections. It was carried out in the course of the EU- wide European elections in 2009 , with 5 of the 736 seats in the European Parliament in Malta . With the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty in December 2011, another Maltese MEP moved into parliament.
The election took place according to the preferential voting system in which the parties present lists of candidates, but the voters ultimately cast their votes for certain candidates, whereby they can specify a first and a second preference. The whole of Malta was considered a single constituency .
In addition to the two large parties, the social democratic Partit Laburista (PL) and the conservative Partit Nazzjonalista (PN), which had previously been represented by three or two members in the European Parliament, numerous other parties competed, but only one of their lists comprised up to three candidates. These were the green Alternattiva Demokratika (AD), which did surprisingly well in the 2004 European elections with 9.3% but did not win a seat, as well as the Alleanza Liberali , the Alpha Partit Demokratiku Liberali , the right-wing conservative Azzjoni Nazzjonali , the right-wing extremist Imperium Europa (IE), the KUL Ewropa , the Eurosceptic Libertas Malta and the Partit tal-Ajkla . There were 34 candidates in total.
The turnout was 78.8%, the highest turnout in the 2009 European elections except in Belgium and Luxembourg (where voting was compulsory). The winner was the PL with around 54.8% of the first preference votes cast, while the PN came in at 40.5%. All other parties fared significantly worse: AD came to 2.4%, IE to 1.4%. The conservative MP Simon Busuttil was the only candidate who achieved the necessary quota for a mandate with the first preference votes alone. Overall, the PL had three seats (four following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty) and the PN two seats.
