Louis Grech (born March 22, 1947 in Ħamrun ) is a Maltese politician of the social democratic Malta Labor Party (MLP). From 2004 to 2013 he was a member of the European Parliament and from 13 March 2013 to June 2017 European Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the Cabinets Muscat I and Muscat II .

Life

Before that, after studying economics at the University of Malta, he was, among other things, Chairman of the Board of the Maltese airline Air Malta , Director of the Bank of Valletta and the Maltese Central Bank and President of the tourism company Holiday Malta .

When Malta first took part in the European elections after joining the EU in 2004 , Grech was elected to the European Parliament . Here he belongs to the group of the Party of European Socialists and has been Deputy Chairman of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection since the 2009 European elections . Grech is a member of the delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand and a substitute in the Committee on Budgets and in the delegations: Delegation for relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo; Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and the delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly .

He was succeeded in June 2017 by Helena Dalli in the Muscat III cabinet as Minister for European Union Affairs.
