Helena Dalli (* 1962 ) is a Maltese politician of the Partit Laburista , the social democratic party of Malta. From June 9, 2017 to July 24, 2019, she was Minister for European Union Affairs and Equality in the Muscat III cabinet . In the Cabinet Muscat I and Muscat II it was previously from 2013 Minister for Social Dialogue, consumer affairs and civil rights. On December 1, 2019, she took over the position of EU Commissioner for Gender Equality.

Life

Helena Dalli holds a PhD in Political Sociology . She lectures in Political Sociology, Public Policy and Legal Sociology at the University of Malta . She also writes for the daily newspapers The Times of Malta and L-Orizzont .

In 1996 she was elected to the House of Representatives , the parliament of the Republic of Malta, for the first time, to which she has been a member since the eighth term . She was re-elected in 1998, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2017 ( 9th , 10th , 11th , 12th , 13th electoral terms ).

During the Sant cabinet she was under Prime Minister Alfred Sant from October 29, 1996 to September 6, 1998 Parliamentary State Secretary for Women's Rights to the Prime Minister. In the Muscat I and Muscat II cabinet under Prime Minister Joseph Muscat , she was Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Rights from March 13, 2013 to June 9, 2017.

After the parliamentary elections in 2017 , she became Minister for European Union Affairs and Gender Equality in the Muscat III cabinet on June 9, 2017 . In this office she succeeded Louis Grech . In July 2019, the government of Malta nominated her as a candidate for EU Commissioner for the von der Leyen Commission . After the nomination, she resigned as Minister on July 24, 2019, and was succeeded by Edward Zammit Lewis . She took up her new position as EU Commissioner on December 1, 2019.
