Life

Before taking office as mayor, the former teacher of English and German was the director of the Dubrovnik grammar school from 1996 to 2001.

She became a member of the city council and the district assembly in the late 1990s and took over the Dubrovnik-based HDZ in one of the worst phases in its history, when the public was shaken by the Dubrovačka banka affair and the secret partnership agreement over the criminal takeover of the bank. Her rise in the party began in the years when the HDZ lost power: she was elected to the Sabor in 2000 , and a year later became the first woman in history to head the city of Dubrovnik.

Dubravka Šuica is a member and a vice-president of the Chamber of Local Authorities of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe .

In the accession-related by-election to the European elections on April 14, 2013, Šuica won one of the twelve Croatian mandates. It moved into the European Parliament on July 1, 2013.

In August 2019, the Croatian government proposed her as Commissioner for the von der Leyen Commission. In this context, a Croatian non-governmental organization and EU parliamentarian Martin Sonneborn asked where the five million euros of personal wealth came from.

She took up her post as Commissioner for New Momentum for European Democracy on December 1, 2019.

In the EU Parliament she was replaced by Sunčana Glavak in the 9th electoral term .
