Janez Lenarčič (born November 6, 1967 in Ljubljana ) is a Slovenian diplomat and politician . He was State Secretary several times and from 2008 to 2014 he headed the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Since December 1, 2019, he has been Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Protection .

Life

Janez Lenarčič studied international law at the University of Ljubljana , graduating in 1992. He then entered the diplomatic service. From 1994 to 1999 he was Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Slovenia to the United Nations in New York City , and in 2000/01 he was an advisor to the Slovenian Foreign Minister and Prime Minister.

In 2002/03 he was State Secretary in the office of the Slovenian Prime Minister under Anton Rop . Then he served until 2006 as Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna during the Slovenian presidency (2005). Afterwards he was the Slovenian Secretary of State for Europe , and his duties included preparing for the Slovenian EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2008.

From July 2008, he served as the successor to Christian Strohal , the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights ( Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, ODIHR ) of the OSCE. In 2014 he was succeeded by Michael Georg Link , Lenarčič again became State Secretary in the office of the Slovenian Prime Minister under Miro Cerar .

In July 2019, the Slovenian government nominated him as EU Commissioner for the von der Leyen Commission . On December 1, 2019, he succeeded Christos Stylianides as Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Protection .
