Nicolas Schmit (born December 10, 1953 in Differdange ) is a Luxembourg politician ( LSAP ) and diplomat .

Life

Nicolas Schmit began his professional career in 1978 at the University of Aix-Marseille III as research officer for international economic relations. From 1979 to 1983 he was responsible for economic affairs at the chairmanship of the Luxembourg government. From 1983 to 1989 he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Luxembourg, among other things as personal advisor to the then Foreign Minister Jacques Poos . From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the Embassy Council at the Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the European Union in Brussels . From 1992 to 1998 Schmit worked again in the Foreign Ministry as a department head for international economic relations and development cooperation. From 1998 to 2004 he was ambassador and permanent representative of Luxembourg to the European Union in Brussels.

He is a member of the Luxembourg Social Democrats (LSAP). From 1989 to 1990 he was parliamentary group secretary of the party. In 1991 he became a member of the State Council and held this office until 2004. In 2004 he was appointed to the Juncker-Asselborn I government. He was Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration. In 2009 he took over the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Immigration. From 2013 to 2018 he was Minister for Labor and Employment as well as Social and Solidarity Economy in the Bettel-Schneider government .

In May 2019, he moved in the EU election as a deputy in the European Parliament one. He has been Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion in the von der Leyen Commission since 1 December 2019 . Marc Angel took his place in the EU Parliament .
