Kadri Simson , b. Kadri Must (born January 22, 1977 in Tartu ) is an Estonian politician. She belongs to the Estonian Center Party (Eesti Keskerakond) . From 2009 to 2016 she was group leader of the party in the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). From November 23, 2016 to April 29, 2019, she was Minister for Economic Affairs and Infrastructure. She has been the Estonian EU Commissioner for Energy in the von der Leyen Commission since December 1, 2019 .

Life

Kadri Simson was born as the eldest daughter of the Estonian historian and politician Aadu Must (* 1951) and his wife Ülle. In 1995 she graduated from high school in Tartu, South Estonia. In 2000, Simson graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in history. In 2003 she received her Masters degree in Political Science from University College London .

Political activity

In 1995 Kadri Simson joined the Estonian Center Party. From 2003 to 2007 she was general secretary of the party. Since 2007 she has held the office of deputy chairman of the Center Party. In the parliamentary elections in 2007 she was elected for the first time as a member of the Riigikogu . From 2009 she was parliamentary group leader of her party.

In 2015, Simons ran in a fighting vote for party chairmanship against longtime chairman Edgar Savisaar . Although she lost the election, she was able to distinguish herself as an internal reformer. After the change at the top of the party in November 2016 and her party's entry into government, she became Minister for Economics and Infrastructure in the cabinet of Jüri Ratas , the new chairman of the Center Party.

Private

Kadri Simson was married to the journalist Priit Simson (* 1977) from 2008 to 2015.
