Franciscus Cornelis Gerardus Maria "Frans" Timmermans (born May 6, 1961 in Maastricht ) is a Dutch politician ( PvdA / SPE ). He has been Executive Vice-President and Commissioner for Climate Protection in the von der Leyen Commission since December 1, 2019 . From 1998 to 2007 and from 2010 to 2012 he was a member of the national parliament of the Netherlands for the social democratic Partij van de Arbeid . From 2007 to 2010 Timmermans was State Secretary for European Affairs in the Balkenende IV cabinet and from November 5, 2012 to October 31, 2014, Foreign Minister of the Netherlands.

Origin and education

Timmermans comes from a Roman Catholic family. His father worked in the diplomatic service of the Netherlands, his grandfathers worked as miners. Timmermans studied French literature at Radboud University Nijmegen and spent a year at Nancy University .

Professional activities

After graduating, he worked, among other things, as a guest lecturer at the Instituut Clingersael. He was a board member for the European Movement in the Netherlands. He worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and for the Dutch embassy in Moscow. From 1994 to 1995 Timmermans worked for the EU Commissioner Hans van den Broek and from 1995 to 1998 as a consultant and private secretary for Max van der Stoel in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe .

Political career

On September 10, 2014 it was announced that Timmermans will hold the post as one of the seven deputies of the EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in the new EU Commission. In November 2018, the Party of European Socialists (PES) agreed on Timmermans' candidacy for the office of EU Commission President and on Timmermans as the top candidate for the 2019 European elections after competitor Maroš Šefčovič withdrew his candidacy. Timmermans renounced his mandate in the EU Parliament , instead of him Lara Wolters moved into the EU Parliament in the 9th electoral term .

Personal

Timmermans is married for the second time. He has two children from his first marriage and two from his second marriage.
