Dirk Arnold Willem van Tets van Goudriaan (* 3. October 1844 in The Hague ; † 25. January 1930 ) was a Dutch diplomat and politician , who from 1884 to 1894 Ministerialresident in the Ottoman Empire and 1894-1905 Envoy in the German Empire was . He then held the post of Foreign Minister in the De Meester cabinet between 1905 and 1908 . During his tenure, the Hague Peace Conference took place from June 15 to October 18, 1907 , and he served as honorary chairman.

Life

Dirk Arnold Willem van Tets van Goudriaan belonged to the noble family Van Tets and was a son of the politician Jacob George Hieronymus van Tets van Goudriaan , who was interior minister and finance minister among other things. His great-uncle was the politician Arnold Willem Nicolaas van Tets van Goudriaan , who was governor of the province of Noord-Holland and also finance minister. He himself entered the diplomatic service and was Ministerial Resident in the Ottoman Empire between 1884 and 1894 . On December 13, 1893, he was appointed by a royal resolution to extraordinary envoy and plenipotentiary minister in the German Empire and as such was from April 1895 to August 17, 1905 also as diplomatic representative at the courts of the Kingdom of Prussia , Kingdom of Bavaria , Kingdom of Württemberg , Kingdom of Saxony , Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach and Principality of Waldeck-Pyrmont accredited . During this time he was between February 12, 1900 and August 17, 1905 also a member of the examination committee for the exams in the diplomatic service. On March 3, 1903, he was appointed chamberlain in the extraordinary service of Queen Wilhelmina and held this office until his death on January 25, 1930.

On August 17, 1905, van Tets van Goudriaan took over the office of Foreign Minister (Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken) in the De Meester cabinet and held it until February 12, 1908. During the First Moroccan Crisis (1904 to 1906) he defended both the “ open door policy ” desired by the German Empire in Morocco and the maintenance of Dutch neutrality . During his tenure, the Hague Peace Conference took place from June 15 to October 18, 1907 , and he served as honorary chairman.

His son George van Tets van Goudriaan was a diplomat and between 1921 and 1945 director of Queen Wilhelmina's cabinet .
