Jonkheer Frans Beelaerts van Blokland (born January 21, 1872 in The Hague ; † March 27, 1956 ibid), Vrijheer van Blokland , was a Dutch politician and diplomat .

family

Beelaerts was a son of Gerard Jacob Theodoor Beelaerts van Blokland, Mr. van Blokland (1843-1897) and his mother Johanna Maria Kneppelhout van Sterkenburg (1851-1923). He was the brother of Johannes Beelaerts van Blokland and Willem Adriaan Beelaerts van Blokland. In 1905 he married Maria Adriana Snoeck (1873–1948) with whom he had two sons. Maria Adriana was a lady in waiting for Queen Wilhelmina.

career

He studied law at the University of Leiden , where he met his two life friends Andries Cornelis Dirk de Graeff and Johan Paul van Limburg Stirum . After his studies, Beelaerts van Blokland represented the Dutch legation in China. In 1923 he became a formateur , but that had no effect. In 1927 he became foreign minister. From 1933 onwards, Beelaerts van Blokland held the vice-presidency of the Raad van State , a function he held for 23 years. In 1940 he went into exile with Queen Wilhelmina in London, where he was her main adviser. Beelaerts van Blokland was feudal with his subordinates and asked to be addressed in the Council of State with the President .

His grave is in the Dutch cemetery Oud Eik en Duinen in The Hague .
