Jonkheer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jonkheer ( jhr. , Young man, young man), feminine form jonkvrouw ( jkvr. , Virgin, young woman), is the nobility predicate for untitled nobility in the Netherlands and Belgium . The word is etymologically related to the word Junker . Daughters of knights are also jonkvrouwen , as this nobility title has no female equivalent. The daughter of a jonkheer is jonkvrouw , but the wife is not. The predicate mevrouw is used for the wife .

In the Netherlands, the Jonkheer title is not explicitly awarded, but is used by all nobles who are not allowed to hold a title of nobility . In contrast to titles of nobility, it does not appear between first and last names, but rather before the first name and in front of the academic degree : yr. dr. Marinus van der Goes van Naters . The salutation for jonkheren or jonkvrouwen is hoogwelgeboren heer (high born lord) or hoogwelgeboren vrouwe (high born woman).
