Gijsbert van Tienhoven
Gijsbert van Tienhoven (born February 12, 1841 in De Werken , Noord-Brabant , † October 10, 1914 in Bentveld near Zandvoort ) was a Dutch politician and legal scholar.
Life
Gijsbert van Tienhoven first studied theology , then law in Utrecht and was then professor of legal history at the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam from 1869 to 1874 . From 1874 to 1879 he was an alderman and from 1880 to 1891 mayor of Amsterdam, and in this capacity he sought to boost the city's prosperity with large port and buildings. He was also the actual founder of the University of Amsterdam in 1877 . In August 1891 Tienhoven became head of government of a liberal cabinet and also took the office of foreign minister. In May 1894 he was replaced by Joan Röell .
