Nicolaas Gerard Pierson (born February 7, 1839 in Amsterdam , † November 24, 1909 in Heemstede ) was a Dutch merchant, banker and politician of the Liberal Unie .

Life

Nicolaas Gerard Pierson, brother of the Dutch theologian and writer Allard Pierson , first devoted himself to trade in Amsterdam after completing his training in economics. In 1864 he became director of De Surinaamsche Bank . He also cultivated economics in an excellent way: he became a university lecturer in this subject and in 1877 received a professorship at the University of Amsterdam. In 1881 Pierson was appointed general manager of De Nederlandsche Bank , the Dutch central bank , of which he became president in 1885. He held this office until 1891.

From August 21, 1891 to May 9, 1894, he held the office of finance minister in the Van Tienhoven cabinet and strengthened the finances through a radical reform of the old tax and the introduction of the new company tax. From July 27, 1897 to August 1, 1901 he was Dutch Prime Minister (more precisely: Chairman of the Council of Ministers) of a liberal union cabinet and finance minister in personal union . In 1905 he was again a member of the Second Chamber . Nicolaas Pierson is considered a representative of marginal utility theory and advocated free trade in all of his functions .
