Schelto van Heemstra

Schelto Baron van Heemstra (born November 14, 1807 in Groningen , † December 20, 1864 in Maartensdijk ) was a liberal , later conservative Dutch statesman. 1861–1862 he was chairman of the Council of Ministers.

Van Heemstra studied law at the universities of Franeker and Groningen . There he received his doctorate in 1830 . From 1844 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General and was one of the nine MPs who advocated constitutional reform under the leadership of Johan Rudolf Thorbecke . 1848-1849 he was Minister for Church Affairs (except those of the Catholic Church). After he held high official positions in the sequence, he was 1860-1862 Minister of the Interior and Chairman of the Council of Ministers. With his now clearly conservative politics, he was heavily criticized by the liberal supporters of Thorbecke.
