The University of Groningen ( Dutch Rijksuniversiteit Groningen ), RUG for short , is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands . It was founded on August 23, 1614 in Groningen . Until 1876 the language of instruction was Latin . The first rector was Ubbo Emmius .
Today, around 30,000 students are enrolled in the bachelor 's and master' s courses in the nine faculties (as of 2016), and a further 775 are working towards a doctorate . Annually they leave about 2,500 with an academic degree. The University of Groningen is the third largest university in the Netherlands after the universities in Amsterdam and Utrecht . The University Library of Groningen is the second largest university library in the Netherlands after the one in Leiden . The University of Groningen is one of two Dutch members of the Coimbra group alongside the University of Leiden .
The university's motto is: “werken aan de border van het weten” (working on the limits of knowledge ).
The university participates in the ERASMUS scholarship program. Since 1994 the Reichsuniversität has been working as an external cooperation partner with several German universities in the association of North German universities to improve teaching and research.
In 2007 the university was counted among the so-called Excellence Group of the 56 best universities in Europe by the Center for Higher Education . With English-language courses and 61% foreign doctoral students (the highest proportion of all universities in the Excellence Group ), the University of Groningen has a comparatively high degree of internationalization.
