history

Construction and locations

Immediately after the conquest of the city of Groningen by the troops of Princes Moritz and Wilhelm and the annexation of the city to the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands in 1594, the city council decided to establish an academy for the training of priests, doctors, civil servants and lawyers. The University of Groningen was founded on August 23, 1614, and the university library was founded six months later, on February 28, 1615 . It is one of the oldest libraries in the Netherlands.

The first location was a wing of the former Franciscan monastery in Bruderstraße, which was opposite the Academy. The monastery complex also housed a Latin school (the current Praedinius Gymnasium) and a church. Despite several extensions in the course of the 19th century - an extensive extension took place in 1864 - the premises became too small. The university library moved in 1898 to a building designed by the architect JW Schafe next to the Martinus Church and in 1919 to a new library building designed by the architect JAW Vrijman.

War damage made the building weather-resistant after 1945, which is why many books were outsourced. After a resulting temporary move to the unpopular location in Groningen-Paddepoel, the University Library of Groningen finally moved in 1987 to a building designed by PH Tauber directly opposite the academy building of the university.
