Leonhard Offerhaus

Leonard Offerhaus (born November 18, 1699 in Hamm , † October 18, 1779 in Groningen ) was a German historian in the Netherlands .

Life

Leonhard was the son of the then professor at the grammar school in Hamm and later professor of theology and oriental languages Christian Gerhard Offerhaus (1612–1758) and his wife Margareta Heshuysen. In 1706 he received his first training at the grammar school in Deventer . His education was continued in 1714 at the grammar school in Gouda and in 1717 he began studying theology with his father at the Athaneum Illustre Deventer. He continued his studies in 1723 at the University of Utrecht with Hieronymus Simons van Alphen (1665–1742), Friedrich Adolph Lampe (1683–1729) and Karl Andreas Duker (1660–1752).

In 1725 he received a professorship in history and rhetoric at the academic high school in Lingen , which he took up on February 25 with the speech Oratio de persecutione Waldensium. In 1728 the curators of the University of Groningen appointed him professor in the same office, which he took up on July 29 with the speech de causis incrementi Antichristi sex prioribus seculis sive de Antichristo in utero ante ipsius ortum et natitavit . In 1744 he became the librarian of the academy, published his main work Compendium historiae Universalis (Groningen 1751) in 1751 and in 1752 was appointed professor of Dutch history and geography.

His further work was followed by a Compendium hist. Foeder. Belgii (Groningen 1753). He also taught about Roman antiquities, including lecturing on de historia virorum eruditorum in 1776/77 . Offerhaus also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the alma mater in 1738, 1745, 1747 and 1754. On May 10, 1779 he became Professor Honorarius, but died after receiving the honor. Offerhaus was also a member of the Dutch Academy of Sciences.

family

From his 1731 marriage with Cornelia Huysinga (1702-28 July 1751) had five children. Two daughters and one son survived the father. The preacher in Winsum, Herman Johan, is known from the children. His daughter Elisabeth married NM d'Assonville, then Johann Gregori te Vere and the daughter Cornelia Christina married JH Warmolts.
