Great Turkish War
- January 26th : The Karlowitz Peace ends the Great Turkish War between Austria , Poland , Venice and the Ottoman Sultan Mustafa II ; Large parts of Slavonia and Croatia are awarded to Austria , Podolia is returned to Poland. Transylvania was reunited with Hungary , which was given to the Habsburgs, Venice was given the Peloponnese . With the exception of the Banat , all Ottoman conquests of the 16th century are lost again. With the peace treaty, Habsburg becomes a major European power.
Great Northern War
- August 25th : After the death of his father Christian V , Frederick IV becomes King of Denmark and Norway .
- September 25 : Denmark and Electorate close the Treaty of Dresden . The offensive and defensive alliance is signed between the Danish negotiator Christian Detlev von Reventlow and the Saxon Lieutenant General Jacob Heinrich von Flemming .
- August II of Poland allies himself with Denmark and Russia against Charles XII. of Sweden .
- November 21 : In the Treaty of Preobrazhenskoye , Tsar Peter I joins the alliance that Johann Reinhold von Patkul forges for Poland against Sweden in secret negotiations . The Great Northern War is taking shape .

- February 6th : The death of the Bavarian Prince Elector Joseph Ferdinand of Bavaria , who was to inherit the Spanish throne, again causes uncertainty about the Spanish succession to the throne after the death of Charles II of Spain . - In the area of today's Louisiana , Fort Maurepas, founded by the French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville , is the first permanent French settlement , from which the city of Biloxi will later develop. Sauvole de la Villantry becomes the first governor of the Louisiana colony . When he takes office, the Code Noir comes into force. It applies here until France has to give up the colony in 1763 .
