Friedrich Ludwig Abresch (born December 29, 1699 in Homburg , † 1782 in Zwolle ) was a Dutch philologist of German origin.

Life

After attending the reformed college in Herborn , Abresch studied Classical Philology at the University of Utrecht with Karl Andreas Duker and Arnold Drakenborch . In contrast to these, he mainly dealt with Greek, not Latin literature (based on Tiberius Hemsterhuis ). During his activity as a teacher at the grammar school in Middelburg , he became vice rector in 1723 and rector in 1725. After the death of his wife, he moved to Zwolle , where his second wife lived, as rector .

Abresch's research focused on the textual figure of the tragedy poet Aeschylus , Aristainetus and the rhetorician Aelius Aristides . His conjectures on the traditional texts took into account several manuscripts, but no longer meet the requirements of modern textual criticism .
