Karl Andreas Duker

Life

The youngest son of the lawyer and Mayor of Unna Johannes Duker and his wife Katharina Elisabeth Roëll grew up with two older brothers and a sister. After visiting the Athenaeum in Hamm, he went to Franeker in 1690 , where his uncle Hermann Alexander Roëll directed his initial training . In 1691 he enrolled at the University of Harderwijk and became a student of Antonius Schultingh . He followed this to the University of Franeker in 1694 , where Jacobus Perizonius had a further influence on his studies. He is said to have received his doctorate in law, but this doctorate cannot be proven in the Dutch doctoral albums.

In 1700 he became a teacher of history and rhetoric at the pedagogy in Herborn , in 1704 he moved to the grammar school in The Hague as vice-principal and was appointed professor of history and rhetoric at the academy there on April 22, 1716 by the curators of the University of Utrecht . He took up this office on May 28, 1716 with a Latin speech about the difficulties of grammatical interpretation of Greek and Roman authors. In Utrecht he also took part in the organizational tasks of the academy and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1723/24 . On November 15, 1734 he resigned from the professorship for health reasons. After that he lived in IJsselstein and Vianen , where he continued his studies. Two months before he died, he moved in with his niece.
