Johann Georg Meusel (born March 17, 1743 in Eyrichshof ; † September 19, 1820 in Erlangen ) was a German historian , lexico- and bibliographer .

Life

Johann Georg Meusel was the eldest of ten children of the schoolmaster and cantor Johann Nikolaus Meusel and his wife Susanna Margaretha geb. Roth. After initially being taught by his father, he attended the Rathsschule in Coburg from 1755 and the Casimirianum grammar school there from 1758 , which he left with distinction in 1764 to study theology at his mother's request. After an unsuccessful trial sermon, he began studying history and philosophy in Göttingen. His teachers in Göttingen were the historian Johann Christoph Gatterer , the statistician Gottfried Achenwall , the philologist Christian Gottlob Heyne and Georg Christoph Hamberger , whose interest was in the history of scholars, and the philologist Christian Adolph Klotz , whom he followed to Halle in 1766. In Halle he received his master's degree and held lectures there on ancient writers and the history of scholars. On June 10th he was appointed full professor of history in Erfurt.

Shortly afterwards, Meusel's appointment to the high princely Brandenburg and Quedlinburg court councilors took place . On April 3, 1769 he married Anna Cordula Herchenhahn, the eldest daughter of the Coburg councilor Anton Herchenhahn. For some time his colleagues in Erfurt also included Karl Friedrich Bahrdt and Christoph Martin Wieland , with whom he later corresponded lively. In 1779 Meusel accepted a call to the University of Erlangen . Meusel was a member of various learned societies; on July 15, 1794 he was accepted as an honorary member of the Pegnesian Flower Order (P.Bl.O.), the only German language and literary society of the Baroque period , which has existed since 1644 until today. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary as an apprentice, he received the title of Privy Councilor as an award. In 1820 he died as a result of several strokes.

Act

Meusel participated in the publication of series and periodicals throughout his life. Encouraged by Klotz, he edited the reflections on the latest historical writings , which, after they had been discontinued in 1774 with a fifth part, he continued under different names until 1787. From 1777 to 1779 he was responsible for volumes 17 to 20 of a general world history published in Halle . He also founded the magazine Der Geschichtsforscher , which appeared from 1777 to 1779 and which he also continued to publish under other titles until 1782. From 1779 to 1808 he published various periodicals for viewing art almost continuously. Between 1773 and 1779 he was also a temporary employee of Wieland's Teutschem Merkur and, from 1775, of Christoph Friedrich Nicolai's General German Library .

After Hamberger died in 1773, Meusel took over his source work Das schehre Teutschland , which he continued until his death in 23 volumes, which had five expanded editions by 1834. Between 1802 and 1816 he added a 15-volume encyclopedia of German writers who died between 1750 and 1800 to this work . His two-volume Teutsches Künstlerlexikon had already appeared in 1778 . In addition, it also recorded composers and musicians of his time in lexical form.

meaning

The lexical work on German writers and scholars, which went beyond Meusel's death, comprised a total of 43 volumes and is considered the forerunner of Kürschner's German literary calendar , which appeared in Berlin from 1879. Meusel's merit was to incorporate, in addition to the life and impact data, all bibliographical references accessible to him, also to create image references and also to take into account remote writings and anonymous. The Hamberger / Meusel or Meusel is therefore still today a unique reference work for opening up the intellectual world of the 18th century.
