Arnold Drakenborch (born January 1, 1684 in Utrecht , † January 16, 1748 ibid) was a Dutch classical philologist .

Life

The son of the doctor of rights and secretary at the cathedral chapter in Utrecht, Evert Drakenborch and his wife Susanna de Bane, had initially attended the Latin school in his hometown. Then he attended the Lingen academic high school . He completed his studies at the University of Leiden and the University of Utrecht . In Utrecht he had attended the lectures in philology with Johann Georg Graevius and Pieter Burman the Elder and followed the law studies with Cornelis van Eck (1662–1732).

Here he acquired the academic degree of Doctor of Laws in 1707 with the writing De officio praefectorum praetorio (Utrecht 1707). Although he had a doctorate in law and was intended for the profession of lawyer, he turned to philological studies. In 1716 he followed Burmann (together with Carl Andreas Duker ) to his chair in philosophy and history, which he held until his death. In addition, he had also participated in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and in 1722 became rector of the Alma Mater .

His Livius edition (1738–1746 and subsequent editions) is considered to be the main work that essentially established his fame. The preface gives a detailed overview of all the authors who dealt with Livy at different times. In terms of content, the edition was based on that of Johann Friedrich Gronovius , but Drakenborch added a number of significant changes by means of manuscripts that Gronovius probably never looked at.

Drakenborch was married to Katharina van de Wall.
