Life

The son of Hermannus Oosterdijk Schacht had completed a degree at the University of Leiden and received a doctorate in philosophy and medicine on September 26, 1726 with the defense of the theses De secretione animali and De motu Planetarum in orbitis ellipticis . In October of the following year he was given the place of Ruardus Andala (1665–1727) as professor of philosophy at the University of Franeker . He took up this office with a speech De arcto, quo philosophia cum omnibus, praesertim medicis, scientiis nectitur vinculo .

On June 13 of the following year he was appointed professor of the medical faculty at the University of Utrecht , which he took up on September 12 with the speech Qua senile fatum inevitabili necessitate ex humani corporis mechanismo sequi, demonstratur . On January 2, 1729, Schacht also took over the professorship in medicine and practice. He had also participated in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the alma mater in 1732 and 1752 . The latter task he put down in 1753 with the speech De arcanis medicorum non celandis (Utrecht 1753). He retired in 1790 and died two years later.

Schacht had made a name for himself as a philosopher, doctor and poet in his time. His library was sold in Utrecht in 1793.
