Cornelis van Eck (born October 28, 1662 in Arnhem , † February 26, 1732 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch lawyer.

Life

Cornelis was the son of Lambertus van Eck and Gijsberta Croezen van Asch (Croese van Ass). He spent his childhood years in Tiel , where his father became mayor and he attended the local Latin school. He completed his first studies at the University of Utrecht under Johann Georg Graevius . On March 2, 1680 he enrolled at the University of Leiden , where Johann Friedrich Gronovius , Johannes Voet and Johann Friedrich Böckelmann (1632–1681) were his teachers in law studies. After he had completed his training, he received his doctorate on June 18, 1682 with the dissertation de Septem damnatis legibus Pandectarum, seu crucibus Jurisconsultorum (Leiden 1682) to the doctor of law.

He then worked as a lawyer in Tiel and was appointed Professor of Law at the University of Franeker on September 11, 1685 as the successor to Gerhard Noodt . He took this office on June 17, 1686 with the speech Oratio de praestantia et necessitate juris civilis Romani . Here he got into some arguments with Ulrich Huber , which were reflected in literary pamphlets. At that time, however, he created his main work, Principia Juris Civilis , which received a lot of attention and, because of its thoroughness, became epoch-making. In addition, he became the rector's office of the Alma Mater in Franeker with the speech Oratio de vita, moribus et studiis M. Antistii Labeonis et C. Alteii Capitonis in 1692 and resigned this in 1693 with the speech Oratio de studio poetices conjungendo cum studio juris Romani .

On May 31, 1693 he received an appointment as professor of law at the University of Utrecht, which office he took up on September 11, 1693 with the speech de Ratione studii iuris recte instituendi . On September 18, 1713, he was also given the professorship of modern civil law at the Utrecht University. Here, too, he took part in the organizational tasks of the academy and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1695/96, 1704/05 and 1716/17 . He also gave the farewell speeches de Studio poetices conjungendo cum studio juris Romani , Caussam prolixitatis litium falso tribui jurisprudentiae Romanae and de Religione et pietate veterum Jctorum .

His marriage to Catharina de Witt in 1696 had produced two children who died young.
