Location and economy

The city is located in the Betuwe countryside , on the north bank of the Waal River . The Linge brook used to flow into the Waal here, but has been dammed. The very important Amsterdam-Rhine Canal ends here and is connected to the Waal at this point via the Prince Bernhard Lock. Tiel also has an important inland port.

The city is connected to the A15 motorway ( Rotterdam - Dordrecht - Nijmegen ) by two exits . There are local trains to Utrecht and Arnhem.

The city is the “capital” of the Betuwe. It is the economic, cultural, educational and supply center of the region. At the point where in the Middle Ages a nuns convent of the Sisters of St. Agnes was, today is the 2000 and 2014 refurbished theater Agnietenhof, which is of national importance.

Tiel is in the middle of the most important fruit-growing area in the Netherlands, which is best known for its apples , pears , raspberries and cherries . The famous De Betuwe jam factory , which had helped shape Tiel's economic life for over a century, ended its activities in 1993. In addition to the large Daalderop factory founded in 1880, which produces energy-saving boilers and boilers , there are also many smaller companies. The industrial park is constantly being expanded.

The BKR has its seat in Tiel. This Bureau Kredietregistratie is an authority that registers loans taken out by private individuals. For example, if a bank wants to decide on a customer's loan application, it can check whether the customer has taken out unpaid loans elsewhere.

history

Tiel was founded as a trading settlement around 850 and soon took over the role of Dorestad after it was destroyed by Vikings around 880 . It traded with England and the German Rhineland . Kings of the Holy Roman Empire granted the place the right to mint in the 11th century . The Rhine toll , which was once located here, was transferred to Kaiserswerth in 1174 under Friedrich Barbarossa . The ties between the city and the Reich are still documented today by the imperial eagle in the municipal coat of arms.

In the 11th century, a silver coin from Tiel reached the Faroe Islands , as the coin find from Sandur shows. In the 13th century Tiel joined the German Hanseatic League . The merchants from Tiel did a lot of trade in the Baltic Sea before a decline occurred after 1500. During the Eighty Years War , Tiel was an important fortress on the river. At that time, the city was spared major war damage. During the Second World War, however, the city, which was at the front after the liberation of Brabant by the Allies in 1944 , was largely bombed. Only in the 1960s could all war damage be repaired. In 1995, the city had to be evacuated at short notice due to the threat of flooding .

Attractions

Church: Sint Maartenskerk
  • Martinikirche (St. Maartenskerk), built in 1440, late Gothic
  • Lutheran St. Caecilia Chapel , late Gothic
  • Sint-Dominicuskerk, rebuilt in 1940, traditionalist
  • City museum, which is partly housed in a city gate (Waterpoort) rebuilt in 1979 and partly in the “Heerensociëteit” building (1789). The collection is partly dedicated to the jam factory and the figure “Flipje”, created by its advertisers. Flipje (Philippchen) is a talking raspberry who experiences all kinds of adventures with her friends Flapoor Olifant, Jasper Aap and Bertje Big. These stories for children, which were extremely popular throughout Holland between 1945 and 1970, could be purchased by buyers of the jam (Dutch: jam, pronounce as in English). If you bought enough cans of these products, you could save the corresponding, colorful pictures.
  • Monument of Flipje in the city center
  • about 70 m long piece of the city fortification from the 17th century
  • Ambtmanhuis - the bailiff's house; from the Middle Ages until well into the 18th century he was dikemaster and judge; can only be viewed from the outside
  • Marina on the outskirts
  • Fruit parade (fruit corso), a colorful moving from Prahl cars, which are composed of fruit; every year on the 3rd Saturday in September.
