Location and economy
Montferland is located southwest of Doetinchem and east of Zevenaar , right on the border with the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia . 's-Heerenberg, Stokkum and Beek are located on the Montferland forest area, on the German border, not far from Elten and Emmerich on the Rhine . Didam, Nieuw-Dijk and especially the farming village of Azewijn are a little further north in the De Liemers area .
The A12 motorway, which crosses the German border in Beek and merges into the German A 3 Arnheim - Oberhausen , has several exits into the municipality, including two German ones (including exit 3 to 's-Heerenberg). At Oud-Dijk, the A 18 motorway to Doetinchem splits off from the A12.
Didam has a train station on the Arnhem - Doetinchem - Winterswijk local line .
The municipality's main sources of income are tourism, small businesses (in Didam there is a larger industrial area) and agriculture. Many residents also commute to work in Arnhem or Doetinchem every day .
history
The municipality was created as part of a municipality reform on January 1, 2005 by amalgamating the municipalities of Didam and Bergh .
The place 's-Heerenberg is a small town that was founded in the Middle Ages around Huis Bergh , the ancestral seat of the Lords of Bergh . In 1379 it was granted city rights , and later even a right to mint . The house where the coins were minted still exists. 's-Heerenberg was walled for a long time and only had two city gates. The castle, called Huis Bergh, fell into the hands of the wealthy textile magnate JH van Heek in 1912, who housed his private art collection there.
Several Roman coins were found during archaeological excavations in Didam. At the time of Christ, the Germanic Chamaven had a settlement there.
A moth later named Montferland had been in Zeddam since 1000 . It is possibly a reference to the great crusader castle in Montferrand, Syria .
The villages of Azewijn and Braamt have also existed since the Middle Ages.
