Location of Zeddam in the municipality of Montferland | |
Hill with the moth Montferland (around 1000) |
Zeddam is a Dutch village in the municipality of Montferland , Liemers region , Gelderland province , about 7 km south of Doetinchem .
Roman remains were found on the hill with the sign X for the 10th Legion that stood in Noviomagus , which can be seen today in the nearby Bergh House .
The Motte Montferland was built as a hilltop castle on a hill 66.8 m above sea level around 1000. At least 7 m of this was artificially piled up for a plateau. The first owner of the castle, still known as Uplade , was Countess Adela von Hamaland together with her husband Balderik . In the dispute over the inheritance of her father Wichmann von Hamaland , she is said to have poisoned her sister, the abbess Luitgard, also to get possession of the nearby Eltenberg (so reports the monk Alpert von Metz). In 1016 the moth was captured by its enemies and razed to the ground.
After that the castle belonged to the first lords of Bergh . During excavations, a gate with 5 m thick walls was found, the thickest walls in the medieval Netherlands, built from Roman remains from the area. The strange name only appeared in the 12th century and can be related to the crusade of Constantinus I de Monte from the Bergh family, who perhaps knew the crusader castle of Montferrand in Syria. In 2009, the hill was found to have subsided due to precipitation.
In 1699 a hunting lodge was built there by Haus Bergh, which today serves as a hotel.
Zeddam was an independent municipality until it was united with Bergh in 1821 .
The Roman Catholic Church is under the patronage of St. Oswald .
