In the course of a community reform on January 1, 2005, the community Wehl became part of the community Doetinchem. In April 2012, the mayors of Doetinchem and Oude IJsselstreek announced that a merger of the two municipalities would be investigated. However, the local council decided in February 2013 to hold the local elections in 2014 - unlike planned - after considering postponing the elections to 2015 in order to seek a merger at the beginning of 2016.

places

The municipality of Doetinchem consists of the eponymous city of Doetinchem, the villages Gaanderen and Wehl and the hamlets of IJzenvoorde, Langerak, Wijnbergen and Nieuw-Wehl. Doetinchem is only around 20 km from Emmerich and 40 km from Bocholt , near the German border.

location

Doetinchem is the most important city of the Gelderse Achterhoek or "Graafschap". Doetinchem is located 25 km east of Arnhem on the Oude IJssel .

A motorway and the Winterswijk – Zevenaar railway (Doetinchem has two stations) connect it with Arnhem.

economy

Doetinchem is a regional supply center (many shops, offices, schools, a hospital, old people's homes, etc.) and also a medium-sized industrial city. In the district of Gaanderen, where iron was extracted and processed from ferrous sand and clay as early as the 18th century, and in Doetinchem itself there are factories that produce ovens, stoves and other household appliances, as well as some printing and magazine publishers.

history

Erfgoedcentrum Achterhoek en Liemers , the regional
archive , is located in Doetinchem in the old school building 't Brewinc. Here is the reading room of this information center.

The city, which was also called Dotecom or Deutekom in the 17th century , was first mentioned in a document in 838. Around 1100 it was walled.

Graf Otto II. Funds gave the place that is located on a bridge over the Oude IJssel, 1236 the city law . The city has always suffered a lot in wars. In the Eighty Years War and in 1672 Doetinchem was badly hit and partially devastated.

In 1580 two thirds of the population died from a plague epidemic. During the Second World War , too , the city suffered such severe damage from bombing that the entire old town was lost for good. Only the Sankt-Katharinen-Kirche was rebuilt after the war.

Attractions

There are a few windmills in the city. One of them houses the VVV (Vereniging voor Vreemdelingenverkeer: Tourist Association).

Slangenburg Castle is seven kilometers east of Doetinchem, in the middle of a forest . It was built in the late Middle Ages and renovated in the Baroque style in the 17th century . Since it belonged to a German in 1945, it was confiscated as enemy property by the Dutch government after the liberation by the Allies. It was sold to the Benedictine Order in 1945 . Monks of the Sint-Paulusabdij in Oosterhout founded a monastery in Slangenburg Castle in 1945. As the monastic community grew, they built the new St. Willibrord monastery two kilometers southeast in the early 1950s . In 1954 it was elevated to the status of an abbey . The Sint-Willibrordsabdij is the youngest of the Dutch Benedictine abbeys.

Since then, the castle has served as accommodation for those who visit the monks for a retreat (period of reflection), to study or for other reasons. Even Protestants are welcome there. The surrounding forest is freely accessible.
