history

For the Roman past of the place see the main articles Mannaricium and Levefanum .

The town of Buren emerged in the late 14th century as a small fortress on the Korne, a small tributary of the Linge . Buren Castle, ancestral seat of the Counts of Buren, was a kind of citadel. It was demolished in 1804; some outlines are still visible in a park.

On July 8, 1551, Wilhelm of Orange married the young Countess Anna van Buren , daughter of Count Maximilian Egmont van Buren . Since then, the title of Count von Buren has been reserved for the King or Queen of the Netherlands.

The family name Van Buren is quite common in the Netherlands. The Dutch kings and queens often used the name Van Buren when they wanted to remain anonymous. For example , when he was 18 , Prince Willem-Alexander completed the Elfstedentocht under the code name WA van Buren in the winter of 1985 . In 1612 members of the Orange family donated the Buren orphanage ; the orphans lived there for free. Buren has a special bond with the House of Orange-Nassau and is called Oranjestad.

Most of the villages in the municipality were built in the Middle Ages, some as early as the 9th century.
