history

In the early Middle Ages , the important trading town of Dorestad was located on the site of Wijk bij Duurstede . After their fall in the 9th century, the area became deserted. A knight named Zweder van Abcoude had a residential tower built here in the 13th century. As a souvenir of Dorestad, he named the building Duurstede. A settlement developed around it, which received city rights in 1300. From 1399 to 1405 Friedrich von Blankenheim had the Maria Magdalena monastery built and settled it with sisters from the Schönensteinbach monastery .

The new Duurstede Castle was inhabited in the 15th century by the influential David of Burgundy (* 1427, † 1496), who was then Prince-Bishop of Utrecht and thus also the secular sovereign. After the Reformation , the castle came into the hands of the states of Utrecht and, when the French destroyed the town during a war campaign in 1672, the inhabitants of Wijks razed it down to two strong towers: they used the stones to rebuild their houses.

To this day, Wijk is a quiet, somewhat “out of the way” provincial town.

Attractions

  • The old town, with its old houses, the large church from the 14th to 15th centuries and the gate on the dike with a windmill . The mill in the picture by Ruisdael was in a different place from today's windmill.
  • The Museum Dorestad (local history museum), with important exhibits from the ruins of Dorestad; in addition small changing exhibitions; only open in the afternoon
  • The area around Langbroek is rich in small pleasure palaces from the 17th to 19th centuries; There is a cycle path to Huis Doorn (see: Utrechtse Heuvelrug )
  • The ruins of the castle with the two mighty towers (a round, so-called donjon and a square tower have been preserved) were integrated into a park in 1852 by the famous landscape architect Jan David Zocher ; Parts of the ruin have been restored. There is also a "party center" (rooms for events).
