Location and economy

Abcoude lies on the river Gein, immediately southeast of the outskirts of Amsterdam . The University Hospital of Amsterdam, for example, is only 3 kilometers from the village. The village is located between the A2 motorway Amsterdam - Utrecht in the west, and the railway between these two cities in the east. Abcoude has a small station on this line.

Several of the old farms were bought by wealthy citizens of the Dutch capital and converted into villas. Less wealthy people also live in Abcoude and work in Amsterdam. Abcoude also has some small businesses as well as trading and transport companies. Livestock farming is still very important in the vast polderland around Abcoude.

history

Abcoude was first mentioned in a deed of donation in 1085 . The famous Dutch knight Gijsbrecht van Amstel devastated the castle there in 1274. Traces of its foundations were recently discovered and excavated. Until the 15th century Abcoude was the residence of a knight family Van Abcoude.

The municipality's deep moors have gradually been transformed into rich meadows since the 11th century .

Worth seeing

The polders in the municipality are crossed by small, very curvy and therefore picturesque watercourses. The narrow paths on the dykes of these rivers are very suitable for cycling tours through this typical Dutch landscape. The Botshol bird sanctuary is located in the municipality.

The two villages themselves also have some quaint, old buildings including the village church of Abcoude, which was built in the 15th century. In the municipality there is the Fort Abcoude, which belongs to the position of Amsterdam . These fortifications have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .
