Aalten ( Netherlands situated community . It is located in the Achterhoek in the province of Gelderland, right on the border with the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia . Aalten lives mainly from agriculture, small businesses and tourism. It has a train station on the Winterswijk – Zevenaar – Arnheim line, operated by Arriva . Of the three castles previously located here, only the Walfort has been preserved.

With the municipality reform on January 1, 2005, the neighboring municipality of Dinxperlo (approx. 8,600 inhabitants) was dissolved and part of the municipality of Aalten, which previously had around 18,900 inhabitants.

history
During the Second World War, a particularly large number of people in hiding in Aalten, such as Jews , politically and racially persecuted persons, resistance members and those who had fled from forced labor, were hidden from the German occupiers and the police. In Aalten there were around 2,500 people hiding for a population of 13,000 . The building market 12, House of Kempink family was of German local headquarters, a refuge in bomb attacks for people from the neighborhood and hiding place for those before the seat Nazis had had to go into hiding. Today the National Hiding Museum is housed there.

- Dinxperlo : The place has the peculiarity that since the First World War the border with Germany has passed through the center of the 7,230 inhabitants. The state border runs partly through land, so that individual houses can only be reached via the neighboring country. A road was also divided. Today the border to the German Bocholt - Suderwick can only be recognized by the different license plates and traffic signs. Dinxperlo also has the only German-Dutch police station. It is located on Dutch territory, right by the town hall. The smallest church in the Netherlands is in Dinxperlo.
