places

The municipality was created in the course of the municipality reform on January 1, 2005 from the merger of five smaller municipalities, which are named below with their most important locations:

  • Hengelo : Hengelo, Keyenborg and Veldhoek;
  • Hummelo and Keppel (in the southeast of the new municipality): Hummelo, Laag-Keppel , Hoog-Keppel, Voor-Drempt and Achter-Drempt;
  • Steenderen: Steenderen, Bronkhorst , Baak , Toldijk and Olburgen (all near the IJssel );
  • Vorden : Vorden, Kranenburg, Wichmond and Vierakker;
  • Zelhem: Zelhem, Velswijk and Halle .

The administration of the municipality is located in the village of Hengelo.

Location, geography and economy

The municipality forms the southwest of the Achterhoek or Graafschap (county), between the IJssel , Zutphen and Doetinchem . Only Vorden has a train station on the relatively insignificant railway line between Zutphen and Winterswijk . There are no motorways in the municipality.

The area is heavily influenced by agriculture . The Aviko potato product factory, which was founded as a cooperation in 1898 and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, is located in Steenderen .

The many mansions and castles with the associated forests and parks attract many tourists.

history

The town of Bronkhorst, which looks like a small village, received limited town charter in 1482 , but never became a real town. When this place and the surrounding glory came through inheritance to a Gysbert von Bronkhorst in 1328, it meant a conflict with the neighbor Heeckeren . This dispute influenced the history of the Duchy of Geldern until the 15th century. Bronkhorst and Steenderen suffered from the Eighty Years War (1568–1648). Steenderen burned down completely in 1782 after a lightning strike in the church tower.

Vorden is surrounded by mansions and small castles. The poet Anthony Christiaan Winand Staring (1767–1840), who died here, wrote some amusing ballads about this in the 19th century.

Zelhem is said to be very old. The missionary Liudger is said to have preached here.

Hengelo (Gelderland) was granted market rights in 1658. An annual horse market has been held there ever since.

The picturesque village of Hummelo was founded in 828 on a trade route near a ford through the Oude IJssel . Nearby Keppel Castle was built in the late 16th century on the ruins of an older building. When France conquered part of the Netherlands in 1672, King Louis XIV stayed there.
