Scherpenzeel ( listen ? / I ) is a village and a municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland west of the Veluwe . According to the CBS, it had 9,859 inhabitants on January 31, 2019 . Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

Scherpenzeel is located in the far west of the "Gelderse Vallei" area, which is known for its chicken breeding and agriculture. Neighboring communities are Woudenberg in the west and Renswoude in the east, both in the province of Utrecht . A good road ( Zeist - Renswoude) leads north around the village. A side road leads northeast to Barneveld , where the next train station is located.

The village itself has a lot of small businesses. Agriculture is also important.

history

Scherpenzeel ( hall , i.e. castle, surrounded by sharp stakes , i.e. well fortified) was built around the castle of the same name, which was of strategic importance for centuries as a border fortress of the Duchy of Geldern opposite the Utrecht diocese. The castle was completely rebuilt in 1856 and now houses several offices of the municipal administration.

Harry de Vries ( CDA ) has been acting mayor of the municipality since January 16, 2019 . His colleagues include the alderman Henk Vreeswijk (GemeenteBelangen Scherpenzeel), Tonnis van Dijk ( ChristenUnie ), Ad van Es (PRO Scherpenzeel) and the municipal secretary Wilma van de Werken.
