In 1835 he became a Belgian citizen. On May 12, 1848, the constituencies of Roermond and Maastricht elected him to the Frankfurt National Assembly. Although the National Assembly supported his endeavor, concrete measures were never taken to make it come true. Therefore, on May 14, 1849, he resigned.

In November 1849 he was elected to the Dutch Second Chamber of the States General from the constituencies of Sittard and Roermond . He opted for Roermond, but did not accept his appointment as a member in order to make the country aware of its desire to separate Limburg from the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
