Heerde ( listen ? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland on the northeastern edge of the Veluwe . Audio file / audio sample

places

The villages belong to the municipality:

  • Heerde (11,055 inhabitants; seat of the municipal administration)
  • Wapenveld (5,875 inhabitants; 4 km north of Heerde)
  • Veessen (680 inhabitants; 5 km east of Heerde, on the IJssel dike )
  • Vorchten (180 inhabitants; 3 km. N. of Veessen; ferry to Wijhe )

Location and economy

Heerde is located on Rijksweg 50 , about 25 km north of Apeldoorn and 15 km south of Zwolle , where the nearest train station is located. There are good bus connections to Apeldoorn and Zwolle. Heerde and Wapenveld are located on a canal that was dug in the 19th century. The shipping connection (which was discontinued around 1960) led to the settlement of some factories. The most important of these, which still exist today, produce paints, paper, rusks and ecological, environmentally friendly detergents. The municipality is located in the middle of the forest areas of the Veluwe and therefore attracts many tourists.

history

All places in the community developed into farming villages from around the 12th century. Between 1407 and 1578 there was a Hulsbergen Brothers House, a small monastery . Its monks did a lot to clear the swampy land between the Veluwe and the IJssel. Because of the presence of clear stream water, paper mills were built before 1850. A railway ran through Heerde and Wapenveld until 1950 (Apeldoorn - Zwolle).

Attractions

  • The forests west of Heerde and Wapenveld
  • The country house De Koerberg, with gallery (sculptures by mainly Bulgarian artists)
  • The small country estates of Bonenburg and Vosbergen, near Heerde
  • The old village churches of Heerde, Veessen and Vorchten
  • Veessen has a marina with a campsite on the IJssel
