West Betuwe is a municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland , which was created on January 1, 2019 from the merger of the municipalities of Geldermalsen , Lingewaal and Neerijnen .

geography

The municipality is located in the middle of the Netherlands, north of the Waal , part of the Rhine-Maas Delta . In the west it borders on the provinces of Zuid-Holland and Utrecht , in the other directions there are the neighboring communities, which also belong to the province of Gelderland.

College van B&W

In the legislative period between 2019 and 2022, the municipal government will be formed from a coalition of ChristenUnie , Dorpsbelangen, Leefbaar Lokaal Belang West Betuwe and SGP . Dorpsbelangen is present with two councilors in the College van burgemeester en wethouders ( German  college of mayors of councilors ), while the other parliamentary groups are each represented by one councilor in the college. Two important main traffic axes in the Netherlands run through the municipality of West Betuwe. On the one hand, the north-south A2 motorway connects Amsterdam with Maastricht in Limburg in the south. Part of this motorway is the Martinus Nijhoffbrug , which connects to the southern municipality of Zaltbommel. The A15 runs in a west-east direction between the major cities of Rotterdam and Nijmegen . In addition, Provinciale Weg 327 , which is maintained by the province of Gelderland, leads from neighboring Leerdam to the village of Geldermalsen.

The municipality is connected to the national rail network via the MerwedeLingelijn and the Staatslijn H. The station in Beesd is on the MerwedeLingelijn , which runs between Geldermalsen and Dordrecht and is operated by the Qbuzz transport company . With the Geldermalsen train station , the municipality is connected to the Staatslijn H , which runs from Utrecht to Boxtel . The trains of the national railway company Nederlandse Spoorwegen are used on this route .

Freight transport

The Betuweroute , a railway line for freight traffic between the port of Rotterdam and Zevenaar, runs parallel to the A15 . It represents an important relief for the Dutch A1 and A15 motorways. In 2017 the route was used by around 475 trains per week.
