- Beuningen (seat of the municipal administration) (17.205)
- Ewijk (3,785)
- Weurt (2,475)
- Winssen (1955).
Location and economy
Beuningen is located immediately west of the city of Nijmegen , on the Waal river . In the west of the municipality, near Ewijk, it is crossed by a motorway bridge. The village of Beuningen is a suburb of its eastern neighbor Nijmegen. In the other places there is a lot of agriculture and some industry (brick factories for the production of bricks and roof tiles ).
history
The area may have been inhabited by the Romans . Like Ewijk and Winssen, Beuningen was a poor farming village up until around 1900, often afflicted by river floods. A nunnery was located here from 1900 to 1970, which alleviated poverty somewhat. After 1928 the situation improved with the construction of better roads. In the meantime, Beuningen has grown into a suburb of Nijmegen, with many new building districts.
In Ewijk, right on the Waaldeich, is Doddendael Castle, built in 1332, which now houses a restaurant.
politics
The local party Beuningen Nu & Morgen won the local election on March 21, 2018 with almost a third of the votes. It forms a coalition with the CDA and the VVD in the 2018–2022 legislative period .
