The municipality is located in the Betuwe region , immediately southeast of Arnhem ; Huissen can be considered a suburb of the provincial capital. Bemmel is 5 km more southwest. To the west of the municipality is Overbetuwe . Lingewaard is bounded to the west by the A325 Arnhem - Nijmegen motorway , which crosses the A15 (Arnhem - Tiel - Dordrecht - Rotterdam ) at Ressen . To the west of Doornenburg, the Rhine divides into its two arms, Pannerdensch Kanaal (north) and Waal (south). At Angeren, the Pannerdensch Kanaal merges into the Nederrijn .
Lingewaard does not have a train station, but since 2007 it has been crossed by the Betuweroute , a new freight railway line.
In the community there is a brick factory , some transport companies, and a lot of small businesses, but horticulture and agriculture are more important. In Bemmel is the Buitenzorg Stud , where many famous trotting horses were bred. Many residents are commuters (Dutch: forensen) who work in Arnhem or Nijmegen.
history
The small town of Huissen was mentioned as a Hosenheim in 814 in a deed of donation from the Lorsch monastery . It became more important when a toll castle was built on the banks of the Rhine . The place received city rights in 1319 at the latest . He belonged to the Duchy of Cleves and from 1701 to Prussia . In 1502 the dukes of Geldern tried to conquer the city, but Huissen held out despite a long siege . This victory is still remembered every year in a city festival. After the Congress of Vienna it was assigned to the Netherlands . Huissen was badly hit in World War II : in 1943 by a bombardment , in 1944 by the Battle of Arnhem . The whole city was rebuilt after the liberation in 1945. Only one house from 1647, where the city's museum is now located, has been partially preserved. Huissen has always remained true to its Catholic religion and its old traditions. There are still the traditional rifle guilds , and the carnival is also celebrated differently than in the originally Protestant neighboring villages.
Doornenburg was built around the castle of the same name. It originated in the early Middle Ages and was rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries. Many influential families, including the Counts of Bylandt, lived there temporarily. The now dilapidated castle was acquired in 1936 by a wealthy textile manufacturer, Van Heek from Enschede , who had it restored. Only a few years later (1945) it was bombed by the British Air Force , which suspected a base of the German Wehrmacht . As soon as the restoration was finished in 1968, Doornenburg was used as a filming location for a famous television series ("Floris"). These very elaborate youth films, with Rutger Hauer in the title role, achieved huge audience ratings at the time . In 2003 a movie was shot there on the same subject.
Little is known about the history of the other places in the municipality; Traces of Roman settlement have been excavated in Bemmel ; there is also the Kinkelenburg Castle, which was rebuilt after the devastation in World War II as it was in 1800; it served as the town hall of the former Bemmel community and is still the community office.
