Location and economy

Topographic map

The city is located on the Veluwemeer , on the A28 Amersfoort - Zwolle motorway and on a railway line, about halfway between these two cities; but only local trains stop in Harderwijk.

An aqueduct in the Veluwemeer crosses the road that leads to the neighboring province of Flevoland (road to Lelystad ).

Harderwijk has port facilities for tourists and commercial shipping.

The city's main occupations are tourism, industry (mainly small businesses), the military (several barracks) and the service sector (including hospital, district court (cantonal law) , tax office). Agriculture and fishing, which were still important until 1932, are rather insignificant today. However, due to its fishing past, the city is still strongly associated with eel fishing and smoked eel .

history

The not insignificant farming village of Selhorst was located in the vicinity of Harderwijk in the Middle Ages . The city itself was first mentioned in 1231 (Herderewich) when Count Otto II von Geldern granted the town charter to the market town .

It developed into a nationally important fishing and port city, joined the Hanseatic League in the 15th century , and had a relatively good connection via land to the Rhine ( karweg , cart road to Arnhem ).

In 1584 Harderwijk received the right to mint the coins of the province of Gelderland. Between 1647 and 1811, when Ludwig Napoleon dissolved it, Harderwijk had a university , where some later famous scholars such as Carl von Linné and Herman Boerhaave received their doctorates.

Harderwijk experienced a major economic decline in the 18th century. In 1814/15 it became a garrison town with the establishment of the Koloniaal Werfdepot . The Koloniaal Werfdepot was a training and retirement center for soldiers who were supposed to serve in the Dutch East Indies , today's Indonesia . The neighboring forest and heath areas were later used as military training areas for infantry and artillery . The military brought an improvement to the Harderwijk economy. Another setback was the loss of fishing in 1932, when the Zuidersee was no longer connected to the North Sea .

After the Second World War , small industry and tourism were strongly promoted. After 1980, Harderwijk was greatly enlarged with many new building districts, and many apartments are still being built every year.
