Irma Heeren (born April 16, 1967 in Middelburg ) is a former Dutch duathlete and triathlete . She is multiple European and world champion.

Career

Irma Heeren grew up in Middelburg and practiced various leisure sports in her youth and was mainly active in football. She took a job in the local police administration in Vlissingen as an administrative worker and took care of confiscated objects and procurements. She took part in a triathlon organized by the police and was able to win her first race.

At the age of 22, she switched from a soccer club to an athletics club, lost 16 kilos and concentrated exclusively on triathlon.

Irma Heeren is a four-time European champion in the duathlon short distance (1993, 1996, 1999 and 2001) and long distance (1999).
She also became a three-time duathlon world champion (1994, 1997 and 1998).

In 1998 she moved to Harderwijk with her partner Chris and then worked for some time at Shimano in Nunspeet .

In 1999 she became the long-distance triathlon European champion in Almere. In 2000 she missed qualifying for the Summer Olympics in Sydney due to an injury after a car accident. She then concentrated fully on running and wanted to achieve her Olympic dream in Athens in the 2004 marathon, but did not qualify.

In 2004 the then 37-year-old announced her retirement from professional sport.
