The Egmond Half Marathon (official name PWN Egmond Halve Marathon ) is a half marathon in the holiday resort Egmond aan Zee on the North Holland North Sea coast, which takes place every year on the second weekend in January. The first edition took place in 1973; this makes the race one of the oldest over this distance in Europe. The organizer is the Le Champion association, which also organizes the Dam tot Damloop . The program also includes a quarter marathon (10.5 km).
The run is challenging in several ways. On the one hand, the winter weather is a challenge, on the other hand, after having led 5 km through the town, the course runs 7 km over the beach to the south and then returns to the starting point on nature trails through the dune area in the area.
With over 10,000 starters, the running event is now one of the largest in the Netherlands .
There was a novelty in 2010 when the 37th run was canceled shortly before the start. The reason given by the organizer was that the local aid organization Geneeskundige Hulpverlening bij Ongevallen en Rampen (GHOR) could no longer guarantee adequate care for runners who need medical help due to the extreme winter weather.
