Runner masses at the entrance of the IJtunnels, 2007

The Dam tot Damloop is a public and street run that has been held annually in the Netherlands since 1985 . It is organized by the Stichting Sportevenementen Le Champion in cooperation with the clubs AV Atos and AV Aalsmeer . The route of the main run runs from Amsterdam to Zaandam and measures 10 miles (approx. 16.1 km).

The event also includes a team competition for company teams, a 4-mile run (approx. 6.5 km), a children's run over 600 meters and hiking tours of various lengths. On all routes taken together, the Dam tot Damloop last year reached well over 30,000 participants.

history

Dam tot Damloop 2007, not far from the start

Cees Lansbergen from Le Champion came up with the idea for a run between the central squares of the two cities, the Dam of Amsterdam and that of Zaandam, which leads through the tunnel under the IJ .

After four years of preparation, the authorities granted approval. The first event on November 3, 1985 had no official competitive character. Of the 4,300 registered participants, the Belgian Jan Sebille was registered first at the finish after 52:09 minutes.

From the following year on, top international runners were invited. The winning times achieved in 1986 and 1987 were not recognized as official world or European best times because the route had not been measured by an independent authority.

A company run has been integrated into the event since 1988 . Since 1995, the elite runners have started ahead of their male colleagues with a time limit that corresponds to the difference between the course records, in order to compete with them for special bonuses for the athletes who come first. In 1999 and 2000 the event was held as a half marathon .

For the 25th anniversary, a second Dam tot Damloop took place the evening before , in order to give other runners the opportunity to start in addition to the 35,000 registrants to whom the actual run is limited.

Route

Today's course, which is slightly different from the original, starts in Amsterdam city center on the Prins Hendrikkade and leads through the IJtunnel initially in a north-westerly direction out of the city. It continues west to Zaandam, where the goal is in the Peperstraat . The 10 mile route is almost entirely flat.
