The Madrid Marathon ( Spanish: Maratón de Madrid ) is a marathon in Madrid that has been taking place since 1978, initially in May and since 1983 in April. Up to and including 2007 it was the largest marathon in Spain , before it was replaced by the one in Barcelona in 2008. In 2010, the event was complemented by a 10 km run, the first edition of which Haile Gebrselassie won in 28:56 minutes. A half marathon was added in 2013 . The 10-kilometer run is staggered, but the marathon and half-marathon runners share a large part of the route. Since 2017 the Madrid Marathon has been awarded the Road Race Gold label by the International Association of Athletics Federations .

The start is on the north of the metro station Colón and starts via Paseo de la Castellana to the north, past the Santiago Bernabeu stadium of Real Madrid and the twin towers of de Puerta Europa in Plaza Castilla to the northernmost point of the route to the Torre Cepsa . After a short loop, the runners return to Plaza de Castilla and turn into Bravo Murillo Street and the Tetuán neighborhood. At Cuatro Caminos square, head back towards the business district on Paseo de la Castellana, which is crossed by a bridge. It goes over Serrano Street, one of the most expensive shopping streets in the Spanish capital, towards Paseo Eduardo Dato, where half-marathon runners continue straight ahead. The marathon runners turn right, again over a bridge over Paseo de la Castellana and Calle Almagro in the direction of Alonso Martínez Square. There the course makes a very tight right-hand bend into Santa-Engracia-Straße to an old drinking water reservoir of the regional waterworks Canal de Isabel II. From there, the runners return to Bravo-Murillo- and San-Bernardo-Straße to the splendid Gran Vía . On this the runners stay only a few meters, it now goes into a shopping area to the emblematic square Puerta del Sol and from there through the old town past the old town hall past the Plaza de la Villa towards Palacio Real . Passing between the Royal Palace and the Teatro Real opera house, head north again down into the Parque del Oeste. Parallel to the Manzanares (Jarama) along the Paseo de la Florida it goes to the train station Príncipe Pio, the old north train station of Madrid, where the runners cross the river into the park Casa de Campo (park) . It goes past a lake, along an old avenue until the course leads back down a ramp towards the river. At the Puente de San Isidro bridge, we cross the river again, the old Estadio Vicente Calderón of Atlético Madrid in sight. It goes back towards Segovia Street. Now a continuous ascent begins at km 36 from 576 meters in altitude up to 630 meters in altitude at the finish. It goes over the Paseo Imperial and the squares Pirámides and Embajadores to the Madrid Atocha train station and then left to the destination south of the Plaza de Cibeles.

In 2014, the organizers tried to defuse the route a little and changed its course. The profile of the course is still quite wavy for a city marathon, a total of approx. 300 meters in altitude have to be mastered. The highest point is 732 meters above sea level, the lowest at 572 meters above sea level.

On October 28, 2001, a Millennium Marathon was held in Madrid . In this unique event, the Italian Stefano Baldini won in 2:09:59 and the Ethiopian Fatuma Roba in 2:28:33.
