Ōme marathon
The Ōme marathon ( Japanese 青梅 マ ラ ソ ン Ōme Marason ) is a road race in Ōme that has been held in February since 1967. Despite its name, it is not a marathon over the classic distance, because the distance to be covered in the main run is 30 km. The event also includes a 10 km run, in which only women from the elite start; for men there are only junior and senior ratings.
The course, measured according to the guidelines of AIMS and IAAF, is a turning point stretch that runs along the Tama River into the area of the neighboring western town of Okutama . The profile is wavy with a height difference of almost 80 m between the lowest and the highest point. Women have been competing in the main competition since 1980. Toshihiko Seko held the course record with his 1:29:32 h in 1981, but only competed as a guest runner and is therefore not included in the list of winners. In 1996, 2008 and 2014 the race had to be canceled due to heavy snowfall. Hobby runners from Ōme's twin town Boppard have often taken part in this event.
