The Istanbul Marathon ( Turkish Kıtalararası İstanbul Avrasya Maratonu, English name Intercontinental Istanbul Eurasia Marathon ) is the oldest and most participant marathon in Turkey . It has been held in Istanbul in autumn since 1979 . The program also includes a 15 km run that has been held since 1999, an 8 km run and a fun run of 8 km without timing, which starts half an hour later.

route

The route is the only marathon course in the world that spans two continents. The start of all routes is in Üsküdar on the Asian side of Istanbul. Right at the beginning the bridge of the Martyrs of July 15th is crossed. After an arch through Beşiktaş , the route between Dolmabahçe Palace and Inönü Stadium leads into the Beyoğlu district and crosses Galata . The Fatih district is reached via the Galata Bridge . This is followed by a turning point route along the southwestern bank of the Golden Horn , which leads to the Eyup Sultan Mosque . On the way back, turn at the Ataturk Bridge onto Ataturk Bulvarı , which crosses the old town. This is followed by another turning point stretch westward along the Bosporus, which leads to Zeytinburnu and extends to the Veliefendi Hipodromu . For the last few kilometers, you first follow the banks of the Bosporus to the mouth of the Golden Horn, go around the Topkapı Palace and head to the destination at the hippodrome at the foot of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque . The vertical meters are 130 m up and 150 m down.

The first two thirds of the 15 km course is identical to the marathon course. On the Golden Horn you first run to the Ataturk Bridge and then turn south and run to the mouth of the Horn in the Bosphorus, where the route joins the marathon course. The 8 km run ends at the Inönü Stadium.
