The Paris Marathon ( French Marathon de Paris ) is a marathon that has been held annually in Paris in April since 1976 (with the exception of 1991) . It is the largest in Europe before the London and Berlin marathons and is organized by the Amaury Sport Organization .
The route begins on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and heads east via the Place de la Concorde . After six kilometers the Place de la Bastille is crossed, and on it goes via the Place de la Nation to the Boulevard périphérique , which is crossed on the Avenue Daumesnil. After eleven kilometers, the Bois de Vincennes is reached, through which the next ten kilometers run before it goes back to the city center via the Porte de Charenton. At km 25 the course turns south towards the Seine , where you go downstream on the right bank past the Île de la Cité , the Tuileries , the Eiffel Tower and the Place du Trocadéro , until you at km 33 west towards the Bois de Boulogne turns. This is the park for the rest of the route until, at km 42, you come to avenue Foch , on which the destination is with the Arc de Triomphe in the background. In 2015, a record starter field of 54,000 participants was recorded.
